Why Nerjis Asif Shakir Will Not Be Part of Regressive Camera Club Culture

Please note this was shot when Nerjis was One year Old ,, now three she shoots the streets of Bandra like a Pro,,,

A message sent to a fellow photographer ,..as forward to Wishes for World Photography Day Aug 19

Promoting photography is good but what disheartens me is nothing has changed the same lighting the same slavish following the old masters and a few pseudo old new masters whose world has disappeared and a new brave world highly digitized more , enervating takes its place , new approach, new perspectives greater use of poetry as a imaginative tool and we at camera club level have no desire to be part of this change and these are my personal views , see one camera club newsletters the images are the same , the lighting the same and than I wonder are we really photographers are mere copycats wanting to remain cowardly backwards ..regressive in time warp and time lapse..

And I hope all this changes one day .. it has I have made my grand daughters both one year old and 4 year old Canon EOS 60D users to see the world as it exists .. without adding or subtracting from the restless angst of the poetry of life.. they shoot and unlearn photography.

For a long time I had not taken Nerjis out , I had to go to Brian Cable to pay my monthly subscription so I decided taking Nerjis along with my camera and my tutorials on shooting the streets ,, from my house to Somnath Lane where Brian has his office is a long brisk walk.. at some places I carried her too..
She shot Bandra Bazar Road , than she shot St Peters Church, she shot the Stanislites practicing football..she shot Brian and his sister and we returned home when it was real dark.

The sprout seller is a Marthi Manoos , he and his wife sell fresh sprouts and is an iconic spot at Bandra Bazar Road.

Bandra Bazar Road is my documentary too on the neglect apathy by our local representatives that we elected to power , and they did not care a hoot but the soul of Bandra Bazar road in deep sleep is finally awakening . Our Vote is not for making politicians rich and the rich man builders richer ,, it is for generating progress and development and not dividing us as Muslims Hindus Dalits and Christians ,,,

And Mr Narendra Modijis Swach Bharat in Bandra a BJP Constituency is million light years away.. dont ask me why .. some soul searching is required ,,

Open dirty gutters and one of the filthiest Municipal markets this poor side of Bandra .. and all this is known as Gaothan .. East Indian pride heritage gone to see .

Who ever comes to powers as MLA here will have to Heal this part of dying Bandra rustic old Bandra .

So Nerjis will now take you all on a tour of Bandra through her vision eyes ..and the Canon EOS 60D .. the camera that has helped make her the youngest street photographer of Bandra .

With a Press Card round her neck Nerjis my 3 year old granddaughter set out to shoot Mount Mary Fair from the Mount Mary Steps ..

For this shot in front of Mother Marys statue a very crowded area I lifted her up and she took the shots , she is highly trained and humble with her shots.

This entire series is shot by her barring a few shots by me .

Sadly there was no crowds , the stall owners looked gloomy and the urchins selling flowers were very desperate .The security was impeccable and no chaos ,or confusion.

Most of the security and the volunteers including the Bandra Police know us ,, and they all pose for Nerjis .

She shot a lot than I let her on the rides at the Fair , she did not want to leave , I carried her most of the way downhill .I got her an ice cream and near Leelavati Hospital got a rickshah for home,

When we reached close to home she shot Mrs Ashish Shelar ..Nerjis Asif Shakir is a 3 year old street photographer and photo journalist using a real DSLR ,, Canon EOS 60 D ..

Khwajah Baba knows Nerjis very well and whenever he meets me he will ask about her ,,yes he has a daughter and grandkids , and he misses them , he begs for them and than splurges the money on them in his hometown.

He and Ali Asghar are the two senior beggars in my area ,, they have seen my grandkids since they were tiny tots.

As I mentioned in my earlier posts most of the beggars of Bandra know Nerjis and are very fond of her if she is with her mom or my wife she makes them give money to the beggars ..

And she is the greatest chatter box since evening she has been driving me crazy she wants to meet her Uncle Shayan Shakir in Birmingham..and I told her it was far but she is missing him..

And she is a true lady .. not a tomboy but she is Spiderman too at home ,,she and Zinnia drive us bonkers Marziya is busy watching CID ,,a daily soap.

Nerjis Asif Shakir And Lucky The Labrador

Nerjis is scared of goats , and wary of dogs , though when she was very young Lucky was her best friend as she grew older , she became more ambivalent to his existence .. she watches him from far and will call him out but thats it.

But Lucky has bee part of their growth..both Marziya and Nerjis.

And I still think animals need love and telepathically select and seek out friends mostly children..

Barbers Of Bandra Bazar Road Shot by Nerjis Asif Shakir 2 year old

Like me my little grand daughter Nerjis Asif Shakir who completed 3 years as per Islamic calendar on 15 Shaban , is fascinated with barbers , her Mundan religious tonsure pictures on Flickr she thinks are very funny , that time she was 6 day old.
She can spot a picture , and it has nothing to do with vision , just street instincts and hard training since birth..

This evening after shooting this lot Itook her through the slums near my house , she tripped fell in the muck I took some water washed her shoes hands, and we moved ahead ..
Than she shot the madman of bandra asleep , some more street shots of kids playing cricket .. till we reached Bandra SV Road bought bloodworms and we crossed the road towards Bandra Talao , I sat to get my ears cleaned she shot a few frames than I held the camera and shot the ear cleaner cleaning my ears .. after I finished Nerjis shot the other ear cleaner , they all want her pictures .

Than I bought some gram for Rs 10 let her feed the pigeons and some urchins she gave money to the kids .. we came back to Bandra ..I bought her icecream.. and this was her Sunday street tutorials .

And luckily she does not need guys to teach her street photography .. on the street walk of Haji Ali .. courtesy Sunday Midday..

Sorry I did not teach my grand kids to avoid shooting beggars .. I let them at a very young age understand pain suffering ..and photography for photography sake has no meaning.. street photography too has a purpose ..

These are some pictures shot on 2 May , I had taken Nerjis out with my camera and this was shot after the photo outing got over , she had walked with me from home to Bandra Bazar Road than to Bandra Hill Road via Bandra Boran road ,, finally to St Peter Road and back home to Bandra Bazar Road ..

It was a very tiring affair , but she took it in her stride happy that I got her some cold drink and chocolates ..I was replenishing her with water too.

So welcome to Nerjis Asif Shakir my 2 and a half year old grand daughters world,.

She will be 3 year old on July 17 the same day her father was born..

from one generation to the next .grandmother ,grand pa mother father and the rest ,have tried to give their grand daughter convent education hope for this generation next ..they are trying escape their world of illiteracy I wish them the very best .. no politician that harp on the Marathi Manoos sadly has done to rehabilitate them for better prospects ..

Getting their votes taking them for another 5 years ride .. a story board of their pain struggle hardship..a fighting test -

He is a Hindu who takes care of a grotto housing Jesus near my house , he and his wife are street vegetable sellers ..outside the grotto at Bandra Bazar Road , the grotto is a Portuguese heritage 16 th century ,,,
Elections come once in five years , but their lives status is unchanged , every rehabilitation scheme for the poor only made the politician builder nexus richer stronger and more corrupt..this is the reality of our times , the poor are remembered by the political party candidate only during elections per se ..after the elections are over it is back to reality for everyone including the neglected son of the soil , the
Marathi Manoos..

As yet the sitting MP or the AAP candidate or the BJP have yet not seen the plight the
filth the neglect in my area.. our democratic process needs to be made citizen friendly not just the poor the slum dwellers or the middle class or even the rich..

After the person wins he will come one last time with exploding crackers , drums known as the winning procession rally ,, than they will disappear for another 5 long years .

Those that elected them wont ever be able to reach them in their ivory towers ,only their chamchas will do your work for a price .
This is the sad effect of the ensuing Dance of Democracy, last two elections I shot this political drama on the streets .. all on Flickr .. this year I have turned my back on this political documentation.

I might take Nerjis who has shot this picture tweaked by me to shoot the streets on Voting Day 2 April Tryst With destiny and let her see the state of affairs the chaos for missing names on the voting list , dead members coming alive to vote and the Great Comedy Show of All Times Our Elections .

The very rich super class will be at Goa Murud Janjira Khim having a ball and will come grumble when the system fails .

We are not happy with any of the candidates in our area , their tall prmises we will be generously using the NOTA button..registering our Vote as a protest against the people we hope to vote out this time ..

This morning I took Nerjis Asif Shakir 2 year old to Bandra Bazar Road for her photography tutorials , so when the policeman asked her where she was going.. she answered back ,,Dada Ke Sath Bhikari Shoot Karne Ja Rahi Hoon,, Her bond with the Bandra beggars is unique , most of them know her as she makes my wife shell out money to them when she goes to school each morning ,,

Nerjis can hold the Canon 60 D by herself but I am scared , so I help her .. the trigger pressing and the shots are all hers ..

Like me she is photo intuitive and will meet the choicest photogenic beggars on her path ..she will never take the camera before placing the strap-round her neck, some shots she sits down and shoots , so she may accidentally chop a bit of the subjects head ..

I hardly shoot pictures and have bequeathed the camera to her in my lifetime ...

Since a toddler Nerjis Asif Shakir has been close to the fisher women of Bandra Bazar Road .. and the best way to learn... or rather unlearn photography is shooting them, and the chaos cacophony of the dirtiest fish market in Mumbai.. the Bandra Bazar Fish Market .. what women empowerment and total Municipal political apathy..
Our Political netas corporators have turned a blind eye to this ugliness , hope Ms Punam Mahajan and Mr Phiroze Palkivala drop by and see it for themselves ..
Priya Ji has yet to come to our fish market her late father Mr Sunil Dutt Saab was an exception he did come here during the monsoons ..
